One thing that keeps coming up time and time again from those who oppose marijuana legalization is that increased access to the drug will result in an increase in crime and violent behavior. However, the reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

Let’s take a look at five reasons why marijuana legalization could actually help keep the peace!

1 – Areas with Marijuana Dispensaries Have Less Crime

Los Angeles is America’s second largest city, so it is no great surprise that managing the crime rate there can be a challenge. However, when medical marijuana dispensaries were introduced to the town, the crime rate dropped significantly. Some may say this is only a coincidence but coupled with the fact that in 2013 when dispensaries were closed as a result of a ballot, the crime rate went up. In the areas where medical marijuana dispensaries were shut, instances of theft, property crime and auto break-ins all increased. If that is not a convincing argument in favor of making marijuana legal, then we don’t know what is!

2 – Border Crime Has Reduced in States with Legal Cannabis

According to the Economic Journal, there is a definite link between marijuana legalization and the reduction in border crime. California, Arizona, and New Mexico all share a border with Mexico, and they all have some form of legalized cannabis. Research shows that since marijuana legalization violent crime and drug gang activity have dropped in these states. This is attributed to high-quality cannabis being available legally.

3 – Less Violent Crime Where Recreational Marijuana is Legal

Statistics show that within one year of Colorado legalizing recreational marijuana, the violent crime rates dropped by 6 percent statewide. In Denver alone, the violent crime rate fell by 2.4 percent. A similar pattern can be seen in Washington State, where a 10 percent decrease in violent crime was seen following recreational marijuana legalization.

4 – A Decrease in Property Crime

Not only has Colorado seen a reduction in violent crime, but also a decrease in property crime since cannabis was legalized. There has been a state-wide decrease of 3.1% since recreational cannabis was made legal in the Rocky Mountain State. In the state capital of Denver, the drop was even more substantial with property crimes falling 14.6 percent within a year.

5 – Fewer Police Searches

In many cases, a confrontation with police can escalate. However, in a study conducted in Ashington state, it emerged that legal cannabis was a contributing factor in the decrease in the number of searches carried out on drivers. Stops and searches decreased by between 25 and 34 percent depending on the ethnicity of the drivers.

These are just 5 of the ways that making marijuana legal can help to keep the peace by reducing crime and violence. There are many other great reasons to support marijuana legalization, not only concerning crime but also regarding health benefits and more.
